Sustainability Management Consulting (SMC)

MAKING SUSTAINABILITY an integral part of the Company strategy

Climate protection and the achievement of climate targets are already an integral part of a successful business strategy for many companies – for others it still means a huge challenge.

Time is pressing: due to new EU directives, even small and medium-sized companies now urgently need to look more closely at their sustainability indicators. In July 2023, the European Sustainability Reporting Standards were adopted. From 01.01.2024, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) of the EU will come into force and will refer to the ESRS. The CSRD affects approximately 50,000 companies in the EU, applies retroactively for the reporting year 2023 for companies with more than 250 employees. Even if one’s own company is not yet directly affected by the CSRD, it may be required by its customers to report and to provide proof of the amount of sustainability in its business activities.

Our industry-independent consulting approach is aimed at companies of all sizes. We are compliant with the reporting standards of the ESRS, GHG Protocol, GRI, GLEC and others. We develop the right solution for our clients, whether it is a comprehensive sustainability strategy or individual first steps on the way to climate neutrality, e.g. getting transparency about CO2 emissions, develop reduction measures or work on compensation options.

MAKING SUSTAINABILITY an integral part of the Company strategy

Climate protection and the achievement of climate targets are already an integral part of a successful business strategy for many companies – for others it still means a huge challenge.

Time is pressing: due to upcoming legislation, even small or medium-sized companies that still have a lot of catching up to do in this area now urgently need to look more closely at aspects of sustainability. On 01.01.2023, the Supply Chain Act will come into force in Germany and on 01.01.2024, the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) of the EU. The latter affects approximately 50,000 companies in the EU and applies retroactively for the reporting year 2023. Even if one’s own company is not yet directly affected by this new directive, it may be required by its customers to report transparency in the supply chain and to provide proof of its sustainability activities.

Our industry-independent consulting approach is aimed at companies of all sizes. We are compliant with the reporting standards of the GHG Protocol, GRI, UN Global Compact, GLEC and others. We develop the right solution for our clients, whether it is a comprehensive sustainability strategy or individual first steps that a company would like to implement on the way to climate neutrality, e.g. getting transparency about CO2 emissions, develop reduction measures or work on compensation options. In addition, we offer support in evaluating science-based targets (SBT) and other sustainability programs.

CALCULATIONS FROM SCOPE 1-3

After an analysis of the status quo, we determine the individual reduction targets together with our clients and recommend, which aspects should be included in the calculation of their company’s carbon footprint, depending on individual goals. We focus on valid parameters and guidelines according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), which divide the different emission sources into so-called “scopes”.

SCOPE 1: DIRECT GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
Originating from direct sources of the company or sources controlled by it, e.g. emissions from boiler combustion, furnaces, emissions from vehicles, etc., or emissions from chemical production in owned or controlled facilities
SCOPE 2: INDIRECT GHG EMISSIONS FROM ENERGY
Coming from the generation of purchased energy (electricity, heat, steam, or cooling) and consumed by the company or otherwise brought into the company's organizational areas. Scope 2 emissions physically occur at the facility where the energy is generated.
SCOPE 3: OTHER INDIRECT GHG EMISSIONS
Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that are a consequence of the company's activities but come from sources not owned or controlled by the company. E.g. the extraction and production of purchased materials, the transportation of purchased fuels, and the use and disposal of products and services.
